Deepsea Challenger Project

Recently, we at Overall Forge forged and machined two 100mm thick high alloy steel discs for the Deepsea Challenger Project, the discs were hot formed into spherical domes. The domes were then welded to form a hollow sphere which is the pressure vessel that James Cameron sat in, for the descent to the bottom of the Marianna trench in the Deepsea Challenger.

The sphere was heat treated and mechanically tested by Overall Forge to guarantee the high strength and toughness required to resist the massive pressure of 1100 atmospheres at the bottom of the trench. The forging was ultrasonically tested by Overall Forge and magnetic particled tested after final machining to ensure the integrity of the forging. The forging was finish machined and then pressure tested in the USA to ensure the forging could withstand the ocean pressure before being fabricated into the Deepsea Challenger.

Overall Forge also forged, heat treated, tested, finish machined and pressure tested a vessel used to pressure test to 1100 atmospheres a number of the components that were being used on the Deepsea Challenger vessel prior to the commissioning of the vessel.
